Fun in a Japanese Kaigi (会議)

by Benjamin Jones on July 27, 2009

If you know anything about the Japanese corporate structure, you probably know that Japanese organizations are all about meetings, all the time, about everything.

Anyway, I ended up finding myself in a planning meeting for the kumamoto downtown street art plex jazz open, despite the fact that I basically knew nothing and hadn’t yet been involved.

The average meeting begins with round the table introductions, including name, title, something else, something else, lots of bowing, and clapping. Kind of embarrassing, to be honest. My speech went something like “I actually don’t know anything about Jazz, but Hayama brought me here in order to listen to how you talk and take notes about it for my research. However, I would love to help out in any way I can!”

From there, talking. Lots of talking. Talking of the sort that I would tend to think is unnecessary or could be accomplished by sending out a few emails.

After the meeting, I discover something like the real purpose for the meeting: to go hang out afterward. So, afterward we go hang out, eat, etc and have a jolly good time. It was also my first experience with natto. I think I drank a whole 400 yen glass of oolong tea to get the natto taste out of my mouth.

Japanese meetings, good times, after all!

The Final Aso Epic Fail

July 26, 2009

One last time before rolling back home I decided to make a final attempt at Aso. It had been over a month since the last attempt, and I thought it might be easier.

It was. I spun up the steep hill with relative ease, enjoying the scenery and not keeling over completely. It took time, but [...]

Pleasure Riding to Yamaga

July 26, 2009

In all my cycling, perhaps one of the things that I missed the most was stopping at interesting places and learning things, which was something remedied by the epic 11 hour tour that I would on with Hayama and company.

The goal was Yamaga, a town in Northern Kumamoto known for being something of a place [...]

Kumamoto Downtown Street Art Plex Jazz Open 2009

July 25, 2009

This event was quite the bomb. The idea is simple: gather jazz musicians from all over and have them play music around the busiest parts of the city on a Saturday, good stuff. So, rather than blab, look at pictures!
However, important note: There was a white guy who used to be the White House pianist. [...]

Turuya, the Greatest Department Store on Earth

July 24, 2009

Damn expensive though. I finally discovered Turuya was the place from where my lost gift chopsticks were purchased, after years of being upset at their being lost. So, for 3150 yen, I had my lost relics back.
I love them so!
While I was there purchasing them in the foodstuffs area, I got so distracted and ended [...]

That’s how old Japanese people liked to tell me I looked. You can judge for yourself. I remain 21.

Misumi (三角) Peninsula Perimeter Fun Ride

June 27, 2009

EDIT: this was a long time ago but I kept forgetting how to pronounce the place.

Yesterday I decided to give myself a day off not only from bumbling around doing research, but also from thinking hard about it, because it was starting to stress me out terribly. Luckily the weather was okay so I decided [...]

Tsuyu Fights Back

June 23, 2009

More than a week ago it was declared the rainy season (tsuyu) in Kumamoto. On that day and the next it rained quite a bit. I thought it was going to be the end of the world: daily rain for weeks.
Since then it has been sunny and hot. The perfect sort of weather. Tonight tsuyu [...]

Amakusa and Back Again

June 23, 2009

When it came time to return back from Amakusa I had grand plans of sightseeing and fun route choices, but the reality of another brutally sunny and hot day ended many of those grand plans.

I started off from Hondo (which is the center of what they call Amakusa city), hit the circular bridge, and then took [...]
